The ideas for the functions of the labyrinth and the interpretations of the vertigo around the beginning of 19th century were briefly reviewed. It does not appear that any one considered the labyrinth to have any relation to a vestibular type of function and was scarcely isolated from various other functional complexes. The idea was solely confined to the auditory function and this gave rise to various fancy mechanisms how the sound waves travel around in the complicated structures within the labyrinth. The vertigo suffered much the worse. The vertigo was long known since the ancient Greek days and available references date back to Aretaei Cappadocis of 2 to 3 A. D. whose monograph was translated into French by Renaud in 1834. The description of the vertigo itself is rather precise but here again the labyrinthine lesions were ignored. Two predominant lesions had been cerebral and stomachal. In the eminent French medical dictionaries, the descrption of the auditroy vertigo probably first appeared in 1865,and vertigo ab laesa(Menière's disease)in 1879
