Although peritonsillar abscess is one of the common ENT emergencies, there is no guideline for the treatment of this disease in Japan. Incision and drainage followed by intravenous administration of antibiotics is frequently employed in Japan. However, recent reports have shown the superiority of needle aspiration to incision and drainage. In this study,we evaluated the clinical efficacy of needle aspiration focusing on the length of hospitalization, the posttherapeutic duration of pain and the days to resumption of normal meal. The clinical outcomes by needle aspiration were comparable to those by incision and drainage. The results of this study demonstrated that needle aspiration should be the treatment of choice in most cases.
