A total of 669 bacteria were isolated from ocular infections during 6 years through 2000 at our eye infec-tion clinic. Anaerobes accounted for 146 strains (21.8%) from 123 patients. The causative diseases included corneal ulcer 24 cases, acute conjunctivitis 22, chronic conjunctivitis 18, keratitis 16, and chronic dacryocystitis 16. The aero-bic strains comprised Propionibacterium 115, Peptostreptococcus 8, Prevotella 6, Fusobacterium 3, Actinomyces 1, and oth-ers 13. Out of 146 anaerobic strains, 47.7% were isolated alone and the others were detected together with other mi-croorganisms. Out of 123 patients, 75.6% had underlying diseases including stenosis of nasolacrimal duct, sinusitis or diabetes mellitus. Almost all strains were highly sensitive to penicillin G, ampicillin, imipenem and clindamycin. Some gram-positive strains were resistant to erythromycin or Sofoloxacin. Some gram-negative strains were resistant to erythromycin, ofloxacin, or vancomycin.
