We developed a device for measurement of contrast sensitivity of the retina. This prototype, CAT-2000, utilizes Landolt rings as optotypes, keeps the luminance at constant levels, and allows measurement of retinal contrast sensitivity at preset levels. We evaluated the clinical feasibility of this device in 151 eyes, comprising 61 normal eyes, 38 pseudophakic eyes, and 52 cataract eyes. Each eye was tested for day vision, day vision with glare, night vision, and night vision with glare. Eyes with cataract showed lower contrast sensitivity under day vision, day vision with glare and night vision with glare than the other two groups. The findings show that the present device promises to be of value for evaluating visual functions in daily life.
