  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated 306 patients of diabetic retinopathy regarding peripheral blood hemoglobin levels. The cases were divided into 3 groups : no retinopathy (groupⅠ) , simple retinopathy without photocoagulation (group Ⅱ) , and preproliferative or proliferative retinopathy including simple retinopathy after photocoagulation (group Ⅲ) . Normal values for hemoglobin levels were set for either sex and different age groups: below 50 years, 6th, 7th, 8th decade and over. The incidence of low hemoglobin was 44.1% in group Ⅰ , 27.9% in group Ⅱ and 27.9% in group Ⅲ. That of high hemoglobin was 57.7% in group Ⅰ , 23.5% in group Ⅱ and 18.8% in group Ⅲ. The incidence of advanced retinopathy was thus significantly higher in low hemoglobin group than in high hemoglobin group (p<0.05). Neither sex nor age was a significant factor. The findings show that low hemoglobin level is a risk factor for progression of diabetic retinopathy.
