  • Look Inside

We reviewed 19 cases of fungemia during 1988-1990 and 20 cases during 1995-1999. Fungal endophthalmitis was present in 11 eyes of 9 cases (47%) in the former group. Candida albicans was the causative organism in all the eyes. Cure was obtained in all the eyes following systemic fluconazole or miconazole including one eye which underwent additional vitrectomy. Fungal endophthalmitis was present in 31 eyes of 16 cases (80%) in the latter group. The causative organisms included fluconazole - resistant Candida albicans 2 cases and other Candida species 9 cases, necessitating systemic amphotericin B in 63% of cases and additional vitrectomy in 3 eyes of 2 cases. The findings show the increasing trend of fluconazole-resistant Candida species in fungal endophthalmitis.
