Purpose: To review cases of presumed optic neuritis treated by pulsed corticosteroid. Cases and Method: The series comprised 31 eyes of 21 cases diagnosed with retrobulbar neuritis or optic neuritis during the past 5-year period. All the cases had received pulsed methylprednisolone. They were reviewed on the basis of clinical record. Findings: The diagnosis of optic neuritis was confirmed in 23 eyes of 16 cases. The other 8 eyes comprised Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) 5 eyes and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) 3 eyes. The final visual acuity was 0.8 or better in 18 eyes (78%) of optic neuritis. Im-provement of visual acuity had set in within 2 weeks after start of treatment. Serious side effects of treatment were absent throughout. Conclusion: Pulsed corticosteroid therapy was effective in the majority of cases of optic neuritis. This therapeutic modality is not indicated in cases of LHON. We advocate attempts at its iden-tification through DNA analysis.
