  • Look Inside

Morphometry of the optic disc was performed on 70 eyes of 50 Japanese. A nerve fiber analyzer was used to measure the disc size and shape with particular attention to sex differences. The series com-prised 34 male eyes and 36 female eyes. Their ages ranged from 23 to 83 years, average 62 years. The axial length averaged 23.7±1.1 mm in 25 male eyes and 23.1±1.6 mm in 27 female eyes. There was no difference between both sexes (p=0.26). There was no difference in vertical disc diameter between both sexes (p= 0.24). The horizontal disc diameter was significantly larger in males than in females (p=0.03). The value of vertical minus horizontal disc diameter was greater in males (p=0.06). The ratio of horizontal/vertical disc diamter was greater in males (p=0.09). The findings suggest that the size of the optic disc is different be-tween males and females and that the optic disc is more oval-shaped in females.
