We operated on 5 eyes of retinal detachment with giant retinal tear. All were males. Their ages ranged from 21 to 60 years. The retinal tear extended over 90 degrees in 1 eye, 120 degrees in 2 eyes, and 180 degrees in 2 eyes. Encircling surgery with scleral buckling was performed in 1 eye. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 4 eyes. Perfluorocarbon was additionally used in 3 of the 4 eyes. The retina was anatomically reattached in 4 eyes including 2 eyes that required multiple surgeries. Retinal detachment persisted in the other one eye due to proliferative vitreo-retinopathy. Complications have been absent including subretinal spread of perfluorocarbon or slippage of the retina after perfluorocarbon/air exchange. These cases illustrate that perfluorocarbon is a useful adjunct during surgery for retinal detachment with giant tear.
