  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We operated on 7 eyes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment persisting 1 year or more after onset of subjective symptoms. The ages ranged from 20 to 82 years. Both sexes were equally involved. Preoperative visual acuity was 0.1 or less in all the eyes. Opaque media due to cataract or vitreous opacity was present in 3 eyes necessitating simultaneous additional surgery. There was no instance of proliferative vitreoretinopathy requiring vitreous surgery. Retinal reattachment was obtained in all the eyes. Visual acuity improved by two lines or more in 4 eyes. The findings show that surgery is indicated in longstanding rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in order to avoid late complications if untreated.
