緒言

　近年における網膜剥離に対する手術々式の長足の進歩にもかかわらず，巨大裂孔を伴う網膜剥離は依然として難治とされている。

　本症については，外国ではすでにSchepens，Freeman等の425例という多数例を初め，多くの報告がみられるが^1〜6），わが国では報告が極めて少ない現状である^7〜11）。

A retrospective survey was made on retinal detachment cases with giant retinal breaks in-volving more than 135 degrees of the circum-ference. All cases were surgically treated at the Department of Ophthalmology, Kyoto Uni-versity, during the 5 years and 3 months from 1970 to 1975.

Giant breaks were present in 14 eyes (14 ca-ses) out of a total of 971 eyes (931 cases) of retinal detachment treated during the above period. Nine were males and five were females.The right eye was affected in 10 cases and the left in 4 cases. The age of the patients avera-ged 29 years. Ten cases (71%) were under 40 years of age.
