We evaluated 25 eyes of diabetic retinopathy using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) to observe the posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) . The series comprised preproliferative retinopathy 4 eyes and proliferative one 21 eyes. Disc neovascularization (NVD) was present in 14 eyes and absent in 11 eyes. Localized PVD was present between the optic disc and the macula in 9 of the 14 eyes (64%). Four of the 9 eyes showed the detached posterior vitreous cortex shaped like a dome. All these 4 eyes had cystoid macular edema (CME) with the posterior vitreous cortex adherent to the center of CME. No PVD was present in 11 eyes without NVD. The findings show that NVD is frequently associated with localized PVD in the papillomacular area and that CME in these eyes may be associated with vitreofoveal traction.
