  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We reviewed 111 eyes of 92 patients who underwent glaucoma surgery in seven institutions. The causative lesions comprised diabetic retinopathy 82 eyes, retinal vein occlusion 19 eyes and others. Mitomycin C trabeculectomy was performed in 41 eyes, nonpenetrating trabeculectomy in 10 eyes and ciliodestructive procedures in 60 eyes as initial surgeries. At the final examination, 92 eyes (83%) had intraocular pressure of 20 mmHg or below, 23 eyes (21%) had visual acuity of 0.2 or more, and 26 eyes (23%) resulted in loss of vision. The surgical failure was siginificantly associated with the initial presence of rubeosis iridis (p = 0.002) and peripheral anterior synechia (p =0.021) . The findings show that effective treatment for neovascular glaucoma is still controversial.
