We reviewed 14 eyes of 9 patients who underwent cataract surgery for complicated cataract secondary to Behçet disease. All the eyes were treated by phacoemulsification and aspiration followed by intraocular lens implantation. Another series of 13 eyes in 8 patients served as control who received the same surgery for complicated cataract secondary to granulomatous uveitis. Intraoperative complications developed in none in Behçet group and in 2 eyes in the control. The postoperative visual acuity averaged 0.8 in the Behçet group and 0.7 in the control. The intraocular pressure (IOL) on the next day after surgery averaged 24 mmHg in the Behçet group and 17 mmHg in the control. The aqueous flare value averaged 39 pc/msec on the third postoperative day in Behçet group and 52 pc/msec on the control on the first operative day. Eyes with Behçet disease developed an average of 1.9 attacks per eye after surgery. The findings show that postopera-tive IOP and ocular attacks need particular attention following cataract surgery in Behçet patients.
