We reviewed the result of primary vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with posterior vitreous detachment in 18 eyes. The surgery was performed by one operator. As inclusion criteria, retinal breaks were located posterior to the equator, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy was of grade C-1 or less. The lens was removed in 2 eyes for cataract. At one year after vitrectomy, the retina was reatteched in all the eyes. Additional cataract surgery had to be performed in 2 eyes. There was no instance of macular pucker necessitating membrane peeling. The findings illustrate the adequacy of our criteria for primary vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with posterior vitreous detachment.
