  • Look Inside

We reviewed 9 eyes which underwent vitreous surgery for vitreous hemorrhage associated with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. All the cases were referrals. The interval between onset of vitreous hemor-rhage and examination by us averaged 23 days. Echography and electororetinography before surgery showed retinal detachment in all the eyes. Eight eyes had total retinal detachment. In 4 eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) of grade C or more at the vitreous surgery, vitreous hemorrhage had persisted more than 3 weeks before seen by us. The retina was eventually reattached in 8 eyes. Intraviteral silicone oil had to be retained in the other one eye which had manifested PVR of grade CA-6 type 4/5. Above findings illustrate that early vitreous surgery is necessary for rhegmatogenous vitreous hemorrhage before PVR develops. concerted effort is desired between general ophthalmologists and vitreoretinal surgeons.
