  • Look Inside

We assessed the frequency of complications as-sociated with acute symptomatic posterior vitreous detachment in terms of sex, age and refraction. The study involved 156 eyes, 156 patients, examined within 3 months after onset of symptoms including floaters and flashing light. The age ranged from 36 to 84 years, average 61 years. There were 53 malesand 103 females. Major complications in the 156 eyes included retinal tear 15%, vitreous hemor-rhage 13%, retinal hemorrhage 5%, acquired retinoschisis 3%, cystoid macular edema 1% and avulsed vessels 1%. These complications were pre-sent in more than half of males who were under 60 years of age and who noted floaters or flashing light consequent to posterior vitreous detachment.
