We reviewed 69 eyes of age-related macular degeneration with subfoveal neovascularization. All the eyes were treated by argon laser photocoagulation applied to the whole area of newly formed vessels. The treatment was a success in 53 eyes, of which visual acuity of 0.1 or over was obtained in 25 eyes (47%). Visual acuity remained unchanged or improved in 42 eyes (88%) . Atrophic creep developed in the majority of eyes but did not affect the final visual acuity. Subfoveal neovascularization recurred in 14 eyes, of which the visual acuity remained unchanged or improved in 10 eyes (71%) . The findings show that this therapeutic modality is indicated in cases of subfoveal neovascularization with poor visual outlook by other means.
