We reviewed the outcome of surgery for rubeosis iridis which persisted after panretinal photocoagula-tion. The causative lesions were diabetic retinopathy 16 eyes, branch retinal vein occlusion 2 eyes, central retinal vein occlusion 1 eye and stenosis of the internal carotid 1 eye. Retinal cryocoagulation was performed as the first surgery in 15 eyes. Other modalities included cyclocryocoagulation, trabeculectomy and vitrectomy. Rubeosis iridis decreased or disappeared in 19 eyes. The intraocular pressure (IOP) averaged 31.9 mmHg before and 13.8 mmHg after treatment. It was well-controlled in 18 eyes. The visual acuity could be maintained in 14 eyes (70%) . It deteriorated in 6 eyes (30%) , due to optic atrophy 5 eyes and retinal detachment 1 eye. Rapid impair-ment in visual acuity was frequent in eyes in which the elevated IOP persisted for longer durations.
