We evaluated 6 eyes in 6 cases regarding the changes in blood flow in the optic disc and peripapillary retina following therapeutic ipsilateral stellate ganglion block. The series comprised retinal vein occlusion 2 eyes, abducens palsy 2 eyes, retinal artery occlusion 1 eye and ischemic optic neuropathy 1 eyes. We used a scanning laser doppler flowmeter (Heidelberg Retina Flowmeter) in quantitating the blood flow in the fundus just before and 30 minutes after stellate ganglion block. Stellate ganglion block induced significant increase in blood flow and velocity in the lamina cribrosa area in the treated side (p < 0.05) . This finding appeared to reflect the effect of short posterior ciliary arteries supplying the optic nerve head. These cases illustrate the possibility of treatment for ischemic optic neuropathies by ipsilateral stellate ganglion block.
