We performed a prospective study on the effect of nilvadipine, a calcium antagonist, on the visual field in 10 eyes of 10 patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) . Another series of 10 eyes of 10 patients with NTG served as control. Both group showed similar features regarding age, refraction, visual field defect and topical antiglaucoma medica-tions. The visual field was assessed using the mean retinal sensitivity by Program 30-2 of Humphrey Field Analyzer. After 2 years of nilvadipine at the daily dose of 4 mg, the treated group showed improved mean retinal sensitivity as compard with the control group. The difference was significant (p=0.005). No significant difference was present between the two groups regarding intraocular pressure, mean blood pressure, heart rate, and intraocular perfusion pressure. These findings show the efficacy of oral nilvapidine on the visual function in NTG eyes.
