We treated 87 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion involving the temporal inferior vein by dye laser photocoagula-tion with the wavelength of 590nm. The ages averaged 64.1 years. Systemic hypertension was present in 58 cases, 67%. Improvement in visual acuity was better in younger persons, in eyes with more manifest macular edema and in eyes treated during the early stage of the disease. The amount of hemorrhage in the macula did not influence the visual outcome. The visual outcome was poor when more than two quadrants of the perifoveal capillary was affected. In eyes with poor initial visual acuity, the posttreatment visual acuity improved in about one-half of the cases. Few eyes showed deterioration in visual acuity. In eyes with fair initial visual acuity, the visual acuity remained either stable or better.
