  • Look Inside

A prospective, self-controlled, double-masked study was performed to determine the effect of 1:80,000 epinephrine to 2% lidocaine in peribulbar anesthesia. In 8 bilateral cataract patients, peribulbar anesthesia was performed with lidocaine alone in one eye and with additional epinephrine in the fellow eye. Both methods proved sufficiently effective and safe during surgery. There were no statistically significant differences between the two methods except elevation of systolic blood pressure in the epinephrine-added group. It is concluded that the addition of 1:80,000 epinephrine to 2% lidocaine is of not significant merit in cataract surgery.
