We performed indocyanine green (ICG) angiography in 39 patients of unilateral age-related macular degeneration with choroidal neovascularization. We evaluated the findings in the apparently unaffected 39 fellow eyes. An ill-defined hyperfluorescent area was present in late-phase angiogram in 32 eyes, 82%. A major choroidal vein was located in the hyperfluorescent area in intermediate-phase angio-gram. This choroidal vein showed dilatation or irregularity in 28 eyes, 72%. Dye staining was frequently present in these veins, suggesting the presence of hyperpermeability. The findings seemed to show that subclinical and progressive pathological lesions are present in the choroid in fellow eyes of unilateral age -related macular degeneration.
