  • Look Inside

We quantitated the velocity of blood flow in the inferior temporal retinal artery in 15 healthy volun-teers. We used fluorescein angiography using scan-ning laser ophthalmoscope at the sequence of 30 frame-by-frame analysis of video-taped angio-gram. The flow velocity ranged from 50.4 to 15.7mm/sec, average 27.3 mm/sec. One eye manifested pulsatile flow with rapidly changing flow velocity from zero to 30 mm/sec one tenth of a second later. This finding was not reproducible when measured one week later. The present observation indicates that the blood flow in a major retinal artery is not necessarily a steady one but can be a pulsatile one presumably synchronous with the cardiac beat.
