We reviewed the incidence and outcome of postoperative infection following keratoplasty during the foregoing 14 years 3 months. A total 1,008 surgeries, including 873 total keratoplasties, were performed during the period. Postoperative infection developed in 36 eyes, 3.6%, either as corneal ulcer 22 eyes, 2.2%, endophthalmitis 3 eyes, 0.3%, and recurrence of herpetic keratitis 11 eyes, 1.1%, As herepetic keratitis had been present in 130 eyes before surgery, the incidence of its recurrence was 8.5%. The most frequently detected causative organism was fungus, followed by staphylococci. Out of the 36 eyes with postoperative infection, the corneal graft became opaque in 60% and the visual acuity deteriorated in 76%.
