  • Look Inside

A 31-year-old male presented with ocular complaints during an acute crisis of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Funduscopy showed tortuous veins and retinal hemorrhages with or without white central area in both eyes. Fluorescein angiography showed capillary nonperfusion, numerous microaneu-rysms and dye leakage simulating preproliferative diabetic retinopathy. Systemic chemotherapy failed to bring the leukemia under control. The right eye was treated by panretinal photocoagulation, PRP. Vitreous hemorrhage developed in the left eye one month later, necessitating PRP in the left eye also. No proliferative lesion was present in the right eye 7 months later and no recurrence of vitreous hemorrhage in the left. PRP appeared to have suppressed progression of leukemic retinopathy and to have prevented proliferative retinopathy.
