We evaluated the value of antiinflammatory therapy following cataract surgery with 3-piece silicone intraocular lens implantation in 103 eyes. The postoperative medications included topical or systemic corticosteroid and topical prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors. We used either betamethasone, prednisolone, diclofenac 1 M or diclofenac 3 M. The aqueous flare intensity was significantly less in eyes treated with diclofenac 1 M or 3 M than with betamethasone or prednisolone during 1 week through 1 month after surgery. Eyes treated with diclofenac 1 M or 3 M did not develop fibrin exudate or cystoid macular edema. These eyes did not manifest corneal epithelial lesion as side effect. The findings show the efficacy and safety of longterm topical diclofenacs in suppressing inflammations after silicone intraocular lens implantation.
