  • Look Inside

We treated 6 patients of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease with systemic cyclosporin A. The series comprised 3 males and 3 females. The ages ranged from 31 to 59 years. Two cases were assigned to this therapeutic regimen because of diabetes mel-litus and gastric ulcer. Other four cases had been treated before with systemic corticosteroid, which had to be discontinued because of major side effects including gastric ulcer, psychological disturbanceor steroid glaucoma. Three cases had shown poor response to corticosteroid. The initial dose of cyclosporin A was 10mg/kg/day in 5 patients and 5mg/kg/day in 1. All the 6 cases showed improve-ment in ocular findings. The treatment had to be discontinued in one case because of deterioration of renal function. Other side effects included hir-sutism, toxicity to the central nervous system, gastric discomfort, feverishness and slight nausea. These side effects were prone to develop when the maintenance daily dose of cyclosporin A was more than 5 mg/kg.
