We evaluated the feasibility of cataract surgery using erbium-YAG laser for capsulorrhexis in pig eyes. Cataracts were produced either by microwave heating or intracapsular injection of alcohol mixed with formaldehyde. In both types of cataract, continuous curvilin'ear capsulorrhexis could be performed with 5 mJ as power output and 35 Hz as frequency. Ablation-aspiration of sclerotic nucleus could be safely performed under the standard setting of 20 mJ and 35Hz. Dispersion of nuclear fragments was a major complication but could be managed by increasing the aspirating pressure. The findings show the potential usefulness of this procedure for cataract surgery in humans.
