We performed cytofluorometry of nuclear DNA to study the cell kinetics of cataractous lens epith-elium. Specimens were obtained during cataract surgery in 12 lenses with anterior polar, cortical or nuclear opacities. Epithelial cells from cortical andnuclear cataract showed identical distribution pat-tern for DNA, consisting of a large number of diploid cells with a few tetraploid cells. Epithelial cells from anterior polar cataract showed a differ-ent pattern consisting of numerous polyploid cells and micronuclei. These results suggested that dis-orders of epithelial cells underlie in anterior polar cataract and that cataract can be classified into 2 groups : one resulting from disorder of cortical fibers and another from that of epithelial cells.
