Eye complications in chronic bedridden patients with dementia

　寝たきり痴呆患者88人に，ベッド上で可能な範囲の眼科的検査を行い，その問題点を検討した。

　約半数に外・前眼部疾患があり，そのほとんどに眼脂があった。痴呆のため眼部の清潔が保てないことと，寝たきりのため瞬目回数が減少し，涙液が涙道にうっ滞することが眼脂の原因と思われた。

　痴呆患者は自発的に症状を訴えることができず，医療の対象から除外されがちであるが，高齢化社会を迎えた現在，寝たきり痴呆患者に対して積極的な眼科治療の取り組みが必要である。

We evaluated the eye problems in 88 patients with dementia who were bedridden over longer periods. About 50% of the cases manifested exter-nal and anterior segment eye diseases. Eye dis-charge was common, presumably due to inability to keep their eyes clean because of dementia.

Reduced eye blinking seemed to be another contributing factor, resulting in stagnation of tear fluid in the lacrimal passage.

Patients with dementia have a lesser chance to receive professional eye care as they cannot com-plain of their eye problems. We stress the need to take active steps to identify and attend to the eye problems in these patients.
