  • Look Inside

We conducted mass screening for glaucoma in the northern district of Shiga Prefecture in central Japan. During a 3-year-period, a total of 3,563 inhabitants, comprising 24% of the population over 40 years in age in the area, took part in the pro-gram. In the final year of the program, 70 potentialglaucoma subjects were screened out of 1,633 per-sons. After more detailed studies in 43 of these cases, we identified primary open angle glaucoma in 17, low tension glaucoma in 2 and pseudoexfolia-tion syndrome in 1. Concomitant nonmydriatic fun-dus photography, performed inaccordance with the health medical services law for the aged, failed to detect any potential glaucoma cases in the general population. We advocate mandatory evaluation of the optic disc whenever fundus photography is performed in the health screening program.
