We evaluated the distribution of sex, age, state of refraction and axial length in 56 eyes of 50 patients with macular neovascularization with hemorrhage and in 121 eyes of 100 patients with senile disciform macular degeneration. The findings were compared with those in 121 eyes of 100 cases matched for age and sex.

In the high myopia group, women were more numerous than men at the ratio of 3.17. In senile macular degeneration, men were more numerous than women at the ratio of 1.70. The state of refrac-tion in high myopia group ranged from -7.0D to-23.5D, average -14.5±3.78D. That in senile macular degeneration raged from +4.75D to -2. 25D, average +1.06±1.25D. The range in refractive power did not overlap in the two groups. The refraction in the control group averaged +0.05±1. 91D. This value was statistically significant from that in senile disciform macular degeneration (p<0.05).

The axial length in high myopia averaged 29.14± 1.47 mm and that in senile disciform macular degen-eration averaged 22.53±0.88 mm. These values were statistically significant.
