We quantitated the intensity of aqueous flare in67 consecutive cases of ocular sarcoidosis using alaser flare-cell meter. We compared the maximumflare reading in each patient with the stage of thedisease. We tentatively defined acute active stageas a period of 1 year or less after ocular involve-ment, chronic active stage when more than 1 yearelasped after onset of anterior uveitis, and oldremission when there was no active sign of thedisease was present for more than 1 year.

The maximum flare value in active and remis-sion stages was significantly higher than in normal. There was no difference in flare values betweenacute and chronic stages. These values were higherthan in remission stage. In remission stage, flarevalue was higher when active ocular lesions persist-ed for 1 year or longer than for shorter period.

The findings indicate that flare intensity is simi-lar in acute and chronic stages. A breakdown.ofblood-aqueous barrier seemed to be a possibilityafter remission of ocular sarcoidosis.
