We measured the intensity of aqueous flare and number of cells in 13 eyes of 7 protracted cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. The duration of the disease ranged from 30 months to 28 years, average 10.4 years. We quantitated the aqueous flare and cells over an average period of 13.3 months, using a laser flare-cell meter. The values for aqueous flare were expressed as equivalents of bovine serum albumin concentration. The maxi-mum flare intensity for each case ranged from 92 to 4678 mg/dl, the median from 46 to 982 mg/dl and the minimum from 38 to 437 mg/dl. The flare inten-sity in 24 eyes of 12 age-matched normal controls ranged from 19 to 39 mg/dl. The minimum values for flare intensity in the patients were significantly higher than those of controls. The findings indicat-ed that the blood-aqueous barrier was in disrupted state in protracted cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Har-ada disease.
