We evaluated the antimiotic effect of topical bromfenac sodium in cataract surgery in 32 eyes. Five institutions participated in the program. Starting 2 hours before surgery,0.4%tropicamide was instilled at the interval of 30minutes. Starting 1 hour before surgery,0.1%bromfenac sodium was instilled at the interval of 30minutes. Another series of 26 eyes received 0.1%diclofenac sodium served as control. Surgery was performed by phacoemulsification-aspiration(PEA)and intraocular lens implantation. No epinephrine was added to the irrigating solution. The pupil diameter was measured under surgical microscope before surgery,at the end of PEA,and at the end of surgery. There were no significant differences in pupil diameter at each point of measurement between the two groups. The findings show that 0.1%bromfenac sodium has the same antimiotic effect as 0.1%diclofenac sodium in cataract surgery.
