Abstract Purpose:Various factors are known to cause rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD). However, since we have experience with cases of RRD occurring after the passage of typhoons, we investigated the association of atmospheric pressure drop with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and report it here.

Cases and methods:This retrospective study included 76 eyes of 76 cases of primary RRD and treated surgically at Yokohama City University hospital during 1,279 days from April 1, 2019, to September 30, 2022. The date of onset was estimated from the patient's subjective symptoms based on the medical records. Using hourly sea level pressure(hPa)data from the Yokohama District Meteorological Observatory, we calculated the maximum and minimum barometric pressures. Further, we determined the maximum and minimum values of pressure fluctuation every 3 hours within 48 hours from 9:00 a. m. on the 73 days with RRD and 1,206 days without RRD. We examined whether these study items were significantly different with and without RRD onset. We evaluated the association between RRD onset and 4 meteorological parameters.

Results:Among the four parameters, the minimum value of 3-hourly pressure fluctuation up to 48 hours before the onset of RRD was significantly lower on the day of onset of RRD(mean −3.11±0.20 hPa/3 h on days with onset, mean −2.69±0.05 hPa/3 h on days without onset, p=0.01, Mann Whitney U test).

Conclusion:An association between barometric pressure drop and RRD onset was observed.
