Abstract Purpose:Eye-frail, which means a decline in visual function, was proposed. The status of eye-frail in the new patients was investigated.

Methods:A total of 5,513 patients who initially visited Inouye Eye Hospital and completed the 10 items of the eye-frail self-check were included in the study. The frequency of each item were compared by gender and age(≦39 years, 40 to 69 years, and ≧70 years).

Results:The total report items checks for men(n=2,250)was 2.7±2.2, which was significantly lower than that for women(3.1±2.2, n=3,263). The most frequently reported items for males were get tired easily(56.0%)and could not see well even with glasses(37.6%), and for females were get tired easily(66.4%)and did not read newspapers or books for a long time(44.9%). The mean numbers of checks by age were 1.7±1.7 in individuals ≦39 years old(n=1,273);3.1±2.1 in individuals between 40 and 69 years of age(n=3,040), and 3.9±2.3 in ≧70 years old(n=1,200), respectively. The most frequently reported items for ≦39 years old were get tired easily(51.0%)and feel dazzled easily(29.0%), for ≧40 and ≦69 years old were get tired easily(66.5%)and do not read newspapers or books for a long time(43.3%), and ≧70 years old were get tired easily(62.8%)and could not see well even with glasses(60.0%).

Conclusion:Eye-frail checks were more frequent in women and increased with age. There were some differences in the checked items by gender and age.
