Abstract Purpose:The aim in this study was to examine the eye frailty status of patients with retinitis pigmentosa(RP) based on the severity of the narrowing of their visual field.

Methods:A total of 77 patients with RP who attended the Inoue Eye Hospital between November 2024 and March 2025 were included. All patients a corrected visual acuity of 0.7 or higher in both eyes. The patients were divided into two groups:Grade Ⅰ(no visual field narrowing;n=41) and Grade Ⅱ(visual field narrowing;n=36). A 10-item eye frailty self-check questionnaire was administered, and the responses were compared between the groups.

Results:The average number of positive responses was significantly higher for Grade Ⅱ(5.7±2.1) than Grade Ⅰ(4.6±2.3)(p<0.05). The proportion of patients with two or more checked items was similar:90.2% in Grade Ⅰ and 97.2% in Grade Ⅱ. The common symptoms in Group Ⅰ were ⑥sensitivity to glare(73.2%), ②difficulty seeing in the dark(70.7%), and ⑨feeling unsafe on steps or stairs(70.7%). The common symptoms in Group Ⅱ were ⑨feeling unsafe on steps or stairs(86.1%), ②difficulty seeing in in the dark(80.6%), and ⑥sensitivity to glare(80.6%). The Grade Ⅱ patients reported significantly higher proportions of ④spilling food on the table(47.2% vs. 19.5%) and ⑩failing to notice traffic signals or road signs(36.1% vs. 14.6%) than the Grade Ⅰ patients(p<0.05).

Conclusion:Severe visual field narrowing may hinders eating, walking, and driving in patients with RP.
