Abstract Purpose:Eye-frail, which means a decline in visual function, was proposed. Improvement of eye-frail status by cataract surgery was examined in this study.

Methods:This study included patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery within one month. A 10-item eye-frail self-check questionnaire was administered before and 3 months after the surgery, and the results were compared before and after surgery.

Results:A total of 48 patients were enrolled the mean age was 74.4±6.9 years. The number of checks on the questionnaire decreased significantly to 1.2±1.5 after surgery compared 4.1±2.0(p<0.0001). The most frequently reported items before the surgery were ⑥feeling dazzled easily(n=38), ⑤not seeing well even with glasses(n=36), and ③not reading newspapers or books for a long time(n=30). The number of checks significantly decreased in 9 out of the 10 items after the surgery(p<0.05). The items where the number of checks most frequently decreased after the surgery were ⑤not seeing well even with glasses(n=29)and ⑥feeling dazzled easily(n=24). The number of items with two or more checks significantly decreased from 42 before the surgery to 14 after surgery(p<0.0001).

Conclusion:The results revealed that cataract surgery improves eye frail patients' quality of life.
