Abstract Purpose:To stop iris hemorrhage in Neodium YAG laser iridotomy, the application of thermal laser was compared with the conventional method of pressing on the eye with Abraham lens.

Methods:Participants in this study were 119 glaucoma patients who had scheduled to undergo Nd:YAG laser iridotomy. Mean age was 72.6±8.3 years and there were 93 females and 26 males. Until July, 2016, iris hemorrhage was stopped with pressing on the eye with Abraham lens, and after July, 2016, the hemorrhage was treated by thermal laser.

Results:Iris hemorrhage was found in 32 patients(69.7±7.6 years, 26 women and 6 men). To stop iris hemorrhage, pressing with Abraham lens was used in 17 patients and themal laser in 15 patients. We employed 10.4±2.2 Nd:YAG laser shots(67.2±13.2 mj)in the patients with lens pressing, and 5.6±1.7 laser shots(36.1±11.0 mj)in the patients with thermal laser. There was no significant difference in 1-year change of intraocular pressure and corneal endothelial cells between the two groups.

Conclusions:Nd:YAG laser energy used for iridotomy may be reduced with stopping iris hemorrhage using thermal laser compared with Abraham lens pressing.
