Abstract Purpose:To report changes in corneal epithelial lesions following switching from fixed-combination ophthalmic solution of timolol maleate and travoprost to that of carteolol hydrochloride and latanoprost for glaucoma.

Cases and Method:This study was made on 19 eyes of 19 cases of glaucoma. The series comprised 9 males and 10 females. The age averaged 74.3±6.8 years. They had been treated by instillation of fixed-combination ophthalmic solution of timolol maleate and travoprost. The treatment was switched to fixed-combination of carteolol hydrochloride and latanoprost. After switching, they were followed up for 3 months regarding intraocular pressure(IOP), superficial punctate keratopathy(SPK), and break-up time of precorneal tear film(BUT).

Results:Before switching, IOP averaged 13.6±3.2 mmHg, SPK score averaged 1.42±0.77 points, and BUT averaged 2.47±0.90 seconds. Three months after switching, there were no significant differences in IOP or BUT. SPK score showed significant improvement one and 3 months after switching(p<0.001).

Conclusion:Topical treatment with fixed-combination of carteolol hydrochloride and latanoprost showed IOP-lowering effect similar to fixed combination of timolol maleate and travoprost, and showed findings suggesting that it may alleviate corneal epithelial disporders.
