Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of transplantation of multilayered amniotic membrane for noninfectious corneal perforation. Cases and Method:This study was made on 22 eyes of 22 patients who received transplantation of amniotic membrane in the past 20 years. The series comprised 12 males and 10 females. The age averaged 61 years. The causative lesion comprised Stevens-Johnson syndrome 8 eyes, heat or alkali burn 3 eyes, corneal ulcer 2 eyes, and corneal ulcer after infection 9 eyes. All the eyes showed absent anterior chamber. Eleven eyes were categorized as limbal stem cell deficiency. Amniotic membrane was obtained during Caesarean section. Results:Anterior chamber was formed within 2 days in all the eyes. The cornea became epithelialized in 11 eyes, including 3 eyes with limbal stem cell deficiency and 8 eyes without. The difference was significant. Eyes with delay in epitheliazation received additional surgery when needed. Conclusion:Anterior chamber reformed within 2 days after transplantation of multilayered amniotic membrane. Eyes with limbal stem cell deficiency tended to show delay in corneal epithelialization, suggesting that this procedure is to be regarded as palliative therapy before corneal plantation.
