  • Look Inside

We studied 34 eyes of 32 patients with chronic glaucoma treated by trabeculectomy, to evaluate the corneal endothelium by means of specular microscopy. We measured the mean cell area and its deviations, maximum cell area, coefficient of deviation, cell density and frequency of hexagonal cells.

In eyes after uncomplicated single trabeculectomy, the central cornea menifested nor-mal endothelium when judged by the above para-meters. In peripheral corneal areas in the vicinity of the bleb, we observed a significant enlargement in the mean cell area.

A significantly enlarged mean cell area was observed in the central cornea after 2 or 3 repeated trabeculectomies or after trabeculectomy with prior classical filtrating surgery.

The present series included 6 eyes with tempo-rary flat anterior chamber after trabeculectomy. These eyes manifested marked enlargement in the endothelial cells and pronounced decrease in cell denstiy.
