We evaluated the influence of light exposure time on the outcome of Competer (Krakau) per-imetric readings. We tested 32 normal eyes of 16 subjects, 32 eyes with ocular hypertension in 16, and 31 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma in 17. The light stimulus was presented for 0.25 and 0.5 second for each eye.

Performance value was significantly low in sub-jects with ocular hypertension and primary openangle glaucoma for light exposure time of 0.25 sec. This suggested that temporal summation for light perception continues beyond the critical duration in these two disease states. For light exposure time of 0.5 and 0.25 sec respectively, the sensitivity was 87% and 97% and the specificity was 96% and 84%.

There was a trend for the number of scotoma to increase in patients of primary open angle glau-coma when tested with 0.25 sec exposure. Use of short exposure time thus facilitated early detection of glaucomatous visual field.
