  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed lipemia retinalis in a 21-year-old male with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and a 47-year-old female with chronic alcohol toxicity. The hyperlipemia was of type V in both cases. No abnormal findings were elicited as to visual acuity, visual field, color vision, dark adaptation, electro-retinogram or electrooculogram.

Funduscopic features in both cases were char-acterized by pinkish appearance of vessels, in-creased light streak reflex, absence of blood col-umn reflex, ill-defined contour of vessels in the periphery due to milky whitening, and better visi-bility of choroidal vascular pattern. These findings disappeared after therapeutically induced decrease in triglyceride levels in the circulating blood. The triglyceride levels in the serum was 5,078 and 3,280 mg/dl respectively before treatment.

We thought that it is possible to determine the grade of hyperlipemia based on funduscopic find-ings.
