  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the fate of gaseous material in 113 eyes with complicated retinal detachment after subtotal vitrectomy. The vitreous cavity was filled with air in 76 eyes and with mixture air and SF6 in 37 eyes. The intravitreal air disappeared after an average of 10.4 days and the mixture of air and SF6 after average of 13 to 18 days depending on the concentration of the gas. We failed to identify factors that significantly influenced the duration of intravitreous gaseous material after evaluating the age of the patient, surgical modality, or volume of the eyeball due to aphakia or scleral shortening procedure as possible factors.
