  • Look Inside

We evaluated the fate of intravitreally injected air or sulfer hexafluoride (SF6) in a consecutive series of 87 eyes with retinal detachment. We tried to correlate the duration before disappearance of the gas with the injected volume, nature of the gas, state of the treated eye and the method of surgery.

As a general tendency, SF6 stayed longer in the vitreous than air by 50 to 70%. The length of stay of air or SF6 prolonged in proportion to the injected volume up to 1.0 ml. The length of stay was in-dependent of the injected volume when the latter was over 1.0 ml. The disappearance time was more prolonged in eyes with retinal detachment with macular hole and in eyes treated by diathermy, cryocautery or scleral buckling procedure.
