We performed a prospective study to determine the effect of ultraviolet filter in the operating microscope on preventing light-induced maculopathy during intraocular lens implantation surgery. Twenty patients underwent extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lens for both eyes. In aran-domized way, one eye of the patient was assigned to surgery with the filter in use and the fellow eye without. The ultraviolet filter was designed to eliminate all the light of less than 420 nm wave-length. All the eyes were examined by fluorescein fundus angiography 1 to 2 weeks and again 3 months after surgery.

Light-induced maculopathy occurred in none when operated with the filter in place and in 2 eyes without the filter. Other factors, including duration of surgery, presurgical visual acuity and individual-ity of the surgeon, were not correlated with the incidence. The findings indicate that the use of ultraviolet filter is of value in preventing light -induced maculopathy after extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation
